Island Welcome

Lucy Simpson

Woven and twined, the form references vessels worn on the body, made to support a journey over long distances, holding the tools of ceremony and necessities of the everyday – needed to survive and thrive.

They cradle memory, embody country and identity, and honour the story of generations.

May these gulay share a welcoming message of togetherness, and of understanding, and may they carry the gift of dhuwi / spirit, the beauty of this land, the resilience of its people and strength and wisdom of the old ones.

There is an old Yuwaalaraay saying.
‘The more you give the more you have, and it is with this sentiment that I have created this piece’

Materials: 2019, kangaroo leather, found objects
